In this spire’sunderground crypt, a video projection tells the unlikely story of the Mummies of Saint Michel. In 1791, 70 bodies were disinterred from the old Saint Michel Cemetery and placed in the crypt. From that point on, this macabre ring of bodies filled the pages of French Romantic writers on their travels, such as Stendhal, Hugo and Flaubert. The mummies remained until the crypt was closed in 1979.
